Interested in having a staged reading or your script? Interested in seeing staged readings of in-process scripts by local playwrights? The Vortex is committed to the development and support of new plays by local and regional playwrights. Playwrights are invited to submit scripts of plays of any length for consideration for a production of a staged reading. The public is invited to attend these FREE public readings.
Selected plays will be assigned a director who will cast the play. Usually 2-4 rehearsals are held prior to the reading. If the playwright has a director in mind, every effort will be made to use that director. The readings are held on Sunday afternoons, usually at 2 PM, at the Vortex Theatre. The playwright must be present and agree to participate in a 30 minute discussion following the reading.
While any subject matter is acceptable, selected plays must be deemed ready for a reading and in an acceptable manuscript format. There is no charge to the playwright for the reading.
Selection of a play for reading does not in any way imply consideration for a future production. The reading series is entirely focused on allowing playwrights to hear their words come off the page to the stage. During the rehearsal process, the director will negotiate with the playwright regarding attendance at rehearsals and re-writes, if any. Unfortunately, each play can receive only one reading and rewritten plays will not be considered for a second reading.
The readings are usually held at the Vortex, early in the afternoon (1:00 PM or 2:00 PM) on the 2nd Sunday after a new show opens.
The Vortex is actively soliciting new plays for these readings. Submissions should be sent to Leslee Richards, c/o The Vortex Theatre, 2004½ Central Ave. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106. If you are interested in directing or performing in these readings, please e-mail Leslee at lesleerich@comcast.net.
